2008 Fairmont Homes Summer Night Series - Game Night 1
Metrostars v N.A.B.
A fast paced opening to the game saw Metros applying pressure in the NAB half, but NAB stood strong with Scalzi unflinching in defence. Metros had the best of the first 20 minutes, but NAB managed to withstand the attacks and put some good plays together themselves. The Metro defence was strong and organised, ensuring any attack from NAB was quickly broken down.
The first goal of the game came at the the 23 minute mark when a Metro attack resulted in the ball skying in the NAB 6 yard box and Spagnoulo out jumped the defender to head the ball home.
Spagnoulo's second came five minutes later when a well weighted cross from Pelligrino from the right was met purposely by Spagnoulo, the resulting header flying past the NAB keeper.
A good first half by Metro was marred by the send off of Pirone at the 40 minute mark for dissent.
Metro continued to attack in the second half, with NAB unable to capitalise on their numerical advantage. The NAB defence was having real trouble containing the wide runs of Stavridis, and at the 20 minute mark of the second half Stavridis received the ball unmarked at the top of the left corner of the penalty box and a stunning strike into the top left corner of the net left Capaldi no chance.
The 10 men of Metro continued the relentless attack on the NAB goal and their forth came when Pelligrino found some space 30 yards out and unleashed a bullet into the top of the NAB net.
NAB's best chance came at the 37 minute mark, when 16 year old first gamer D'Agostino made a run past the Metro defence but the resulting shot narrowly flew over the Metro crossbar.
Five minutes from time, bad news for Metro when their goalkeeper Godley rolled an ankle taking an overhead catch over an NAB striker. This saw Metro finish the game with 9 men, but still managed to keep a clean sheet.
